Fellow Scouters,
This note is to update you on the status of Camp Daniel Boone and clarify some of the decisions made during week one. We had several campers come into the health lodge from one troop on Monday with a fever. They were checked with our standard thermometer using a protective cover. At this time we called the Haywood County Health Department to begin working with them. They visited our facility on Tuesday and took samples to be tested. All scouts with the fever were isolated from the time the fever was detected. Most of these scouts voluntarily went home the next day, those who chose to stay remained in isolation. Thursday evening we received the results with two confirmed cases of H1N1 Flu. We were asked to check every camper that night to limit the possible spread.
We visited the local stores purchasing every thermometer and cover available, then used alcohol wipes as a last resort to sterilize all thermometers. Each unit was issued a thermometer and alcohol or covers. We have since acquired 3 digital infrared thermometers that read temperatures from the forehead. We have not received word from any health department of additional confirmed cases at this time. We are scheduled to update the situation on Monday with the Haywood County Health Department officials who were present in camp during check-in today. We are happy to report that all campers arriving today were screened for fever and all campers appear to be healthy and looking forward to a great week at camp. The campsite that had the prominent number of cases last week has been closed for this week. We expect to reopen it next week.
We will continue to monitor all campers and staff throughout the week. We have taken steps to treat all staff to ensure their health and the health of our campers for future weeks. We anticipate a full season of service to our scouts and scouters this summer as we have for 70 years.
Please continue to post questions and we will do our best to respond as quickly as possible.
Yours in Scouting,
Dan Rogers
