Camp Daniel Boone Update
By Sheltowee @ 6:59 PM :: 825 Views :: 6 Comments ::

Fellow Scouters,

This note is to update you on the status of Camp Daniel Boone and clarify some of the decisions made during week one. We had several campers come into the health lodge from one troop on Monday with a fever. They were checked with our standard thermometer using a protective cover. At this time we called the Haywood County Health Department to begin working with them. They visited our facility on Tuesday and took samples to be tested. All scouts with the fever were isolated from the time the fever was detected. Most of these scouts voluntarily went home the next day, those who chose to stay remained in isolation. Thursday evening we received the results with two confirmed cases of H1N1 Flu. We were asked to check every camper that night to limit the possible spread.
We visited the local stores purchasing every thermometer and cover available, then used alcohol wipes as a last resort to sterilize all thermometers. Each unit was issued a thermometer and alcohol or covers. We have since acquired 3 digital infrared thermometers that read temperatures from the forehead. We have not received word from any health department of additional confirmed cases at this time. We are scheduled to update the situation on Monday with the Haywood County Health Department officials who were present in camp during check-in today. We are happy to report that all campers arriving today were screened for fever and all campers appear to be healthy and looking forward to a great week at camp. The campsite that had the prominent number of cases last week has been closed for this week. We expect to reopen it next week.
We will continue to monitor all campers and staff throughout the week. We have taken steps to treat all staff to ensure their health and the health of our campers for future weeks. We anticipate a full season of service to our scouts and scouters this summer as we have for 70 years.
Please continue to post questions and we will do our best to respond as quickly as possible.

Yours in Scouting,

Dan Rogers
Camp Director

I have full confidence in the abilities of the staff at Camp Daniel Boone.

The leadership acted quickly involving the proper authorities and minimized the outbreak to the best of their abilities. They can only control the controlables.

God Bless each staffer as they work so hard to push past this and each camper as he looks toward a great summer. We look forward to being there soon.

My son works here as he has the past 3 years and I have complete faith and confidence that all that can be done has and will be done with the utmost professionalism and compassion. Camp Daniel Boone is a small slice of Heaven and I trust and believe that God will continue to guide and protect those that are there. Thanks for the updates.

The Staff of Camp Daniel Boone has done a wonderful job. They have acted and responded just as we would expect how Scouts should have that is, in accordance with the highest ideals of Scouting. I am proud to say that my oldest son is proud staff member and my youngest son is an equally proud camper. My oldest will continue to work there and my youngest who was there last week is looking forward to returning in 2 weeks. I hope that people will make sure that the information that they get and pass on is true and correct and not simply based upon heresay, rumors, and inuendos. I for one have the utmost of trust and confidence in Dan Rogers and the entire Staff of Camp Daniel Boone. They will always put the safety of everyone first as well as insure one of the most fantastic Boy Scout Summer Camp experiences a young man can ever have!!!

My son is also a staffer, I am so glad he was there to experience this situation and learn how to properly handle things through competent leadership.

My son's BSA troop is to attend next week. We are being told that the scouts will have their temperature checked twice a day and if anyone in the troop is 99 F or over the whole troop goes to isolation for 7 days. 99 is barley over the norm of 98.6. Many people normally have their temperature 99. Also if they have a cough theis would send them all as well. What is a cough? One cough, occassional cough, or frequent coughing? I'm concerned that the troop has a pretty good chance of someone being 99 and them all going to isolation. How about boys with allergies who cough and have slight temperature elevations? Is this true? We are not afraid of them getting ill and know the camp has done everything to clean the camp and keep the kids safe. We are coming from SW Florida and would hate for the boys to spend the week in isolation. What do they do in isolation? It is hard as a parent to decide if my son should go. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
