6-15-09 Camp Update

Camp reports that it has been a calm and good day for scouting, with no new health incidents to report. Staff and Campers have enjoyed the day after a great campfire last night. Our notification to incoming leaders asking them to screen all incoming campers resulted in all scouts reporting with no apparent illnesses. We will continue this procedure throughout the season.
Camp officials met with the Haywood County Health department officials today to review last week's camp procedures and procedures moving forward. We are operating on a two prong approach of active surveillance of staff and campers and getting anyone reporting an illness out of the general population when identified.
We are concerned about new reports of new cases from scouts who have returned home and wish for them to have a speedy recovery. It is important to note that while we knew there were children in camp who were ill, the H1N1 confimations were not reported to us until late Thursday evening. At that time we began notifying leaders and following health department procedures. All leaders in camp should have received letters to give to their scouts and parents. It is possible that with some leaders departing early the letters might not have been received.
We are happy to hear that other state health departments have been in contact with leaders since we provided contact information through our health department to other states.
We appreciate all posts to this website but especially those that offer constructive advice. We will do our best to keep everyone posted through this website.

I am a parent of 2 scouts who were there last week. They kept me informed. I heard from one on Thursday night and the other on Friday morning. When each called their leaders were there to answer any questions. When large numbers of people gather together germs will spread. So for the camp to keep the numbers as low as they did, tells me they did and are doing all that is possible. I believe the camp has handled this unfortunate situation very well. Thank you for continuing to keep us informed and up-to-date. Sharing the known facts keeps people and media from spreading speculation and rumors. I look forward to many other visits to Daniel Boone.

I am the parent of a scout at your camp this week. My husband is also the scoutmaster of the group. Even though we heard about last week's incident on Friday, we were very impressed by the informed message that we received. After contacting the 12 parents, all of the boys were able to continue to camp as planned. I appreciate the professionalism of Camp Daniel Boone, and am glad that our boys were able to continue with the plan that they have looked forward to for a year. I have spoken with my husband and all seems well. Thank you.

Thank you for the daily updates, they are much appreciated! My husband and son are at CDB this week, and according to reports to home from their troop, they are all having a great time. It's nice to know the situation is being closely monitored, and our campers are well cared for.

Yes! Please keep daily updates coming. Our Troop Scouts and their Adult Leaders are watching hopefully that this will continue to be a manageable problem and even be over with when we get there soon.

Keep up the good work and information. I think that with approx. 700 campers there you have done an excellent job with this situation. Our troop will be there next week and we are looking foward to a great week at CDB.

Please give us updates daily - I'm antsy to hear that all is well, especially since I have a camper there this week. Are there still no cases? Is everyone okay? Thanks for keeping us in the know!

I would love to see posts daily on how things are going. Are all the staff well and out of quarantine? Would just like to hear that all is well to ease my worries. My son is a first time camper there this week. Thanks!

I ditto the previous mother's comments. I also have a first time camper at CDB this week. I have heard no word from my child nor anyone else from his troop or the staff at CDB. I'll assume that no news is good news. But, a daily post from the Camp during this critical time would be nice. I'm a little tired of hearing the latest news from the media well before a post from CDB. I have read on several local news media sites that there have been many more confirmed cases than CDB has reported. I was trying not to be paranoid and/or panic over the situation and went ahead and sent my son to camp on Sunday. But, after reading the comments from parents and scout leaders with children that were affected last week; I am really wondering if I made the right decision.

I know this isn't a substitute from an update from the council, but I did visit the camp today. Everyone seems to be in good spirits, and there have been no new outbreaks of sickness. The staff who had fevers are still in quarantine and some won't be out until Thursday. I believe you have to be quarantined for 7 after getting fever.

I'm also concerned about my son who is at camp at CDB this week. The stories in the media have many more confirmed cases. I understand most of these were confirmed after campers returned home. It would be great if the camp could post an update. I understand all the staff members who are showing symptoms have been isolated, and other staff members are being monitored. However, my concern is that staff may infect campers before showing symptoms. This is a concern for me because of other family members with healh issues that my son could possible infect if he comes down with the virus. Like the Mom who posted under ditto I am now wondering if I made the right decision when I allowed my son to come to camp. Daily updates would make me feel much better!

Nice to see continuing support for the camp. I believe parents who made the decision to allow their son to attend DID make the right decision. I say that because Dan Rogers, the camp director, is a professional. Did you know he walked across America and is the author of a book about his experiences? And the Camp Commissioner and Asst. Camp Commissioner this year are both Eagle Scouts from my troop. They have a total of 7 years of experience as camp staff. I would trust my life with these young men! In fact, with my heart condition, I HAVE trusted my life with these men! They will take EXCELLENT care of your sons! Mr. A

Well said, Mr. A. Dan Rogers is an amazing leader, particularly of young men, and he is a tireless worker who has repeatedly proven himself steady and cool-headed in times of crisis. I doubt that many people out there could have done a better job than he has of keeping things under control at the camp. He loves Camp Daniel Boone, he loves Scouting, and he cares deeply about his staff and the Scouters who come to the camp. I'm sure he'll be the first to admit that last week brought many opportunities for lessons learned, but anyone who thinks that Dan Rogers and CDB do not make their kids a priority needs to think again.

There have been no new cases of flu at camp this week. There are staff still in isolation from last week but their full 7 days is nearing an end and they are anxious to get back to work serving our customers. Great week so far!

One more point I'd like to address. We are learning this week just how valuable a communication tool we have with this website comment section. We realize that people are anxious for news and would love to provide it as often as possible, but our focus has been on continuously providing a safe and exciting camping experience for scouts this week and along with many other daily tasks, we sometimes just can't get to the computers. We will try and improve that process, realizing how important it is for parents who have entrusted their children to our care.
