June 17 Camp Update
By Sheltowee @ 4:23 PM :: 518 Views :: 8 Comments ::

Wednesday was another fine day with no scouts reporting to the health lodge with a fever. All scouts were again checked with the thermal scan thermometers. The leaders enjoyed fresh baked trout for lunch and later in the day the bluegrass band arrived and delivered a rousing performance for the hoedown on the lawn crowd.

No new cases? But this article says that three more staff members were diagnosed and there may be more campers with flu-like symptoms. Are things really okay?

Thank you for taking the time to update us on the happenings at CDB each day. It wasn't long ago that this kind of near-real-time connectivity was just not possible -- and we'd have to wait a week to hear about events when the kids got back. My wife and I very much appreciate those in the Scouts leadership that are spending their time to lead our young men on the right path -- at a time when this kind of experience is just not available in other organizations. Your leadership in handling the flu-bug has been a great example for these boys in how to deal with adversity. Bravo.

Also, the staffers that were confirmed to have the flu at Daniel Boone were already quarantined last week when the showed symptoms. The results just came back and confirmed they definitely had it.

I realize there is concern over this flu but understand with some phone calls to your child's pediatrician/doctor they will quicklyl tell you more people should worry over the regular flu virus NOT H1N1. It is good common sense measures that will ensure all the boys at CDB have a successful week. Camp Staff-good job! Using preventative measure will ensure continued success. Our boys are enjoying themselves which is all we can hope for. I am sure that if the "outbreak" was as bad as the media makes it a local health agency such as the Health Department would be involved. To all those leaders and staff, "I thank you!!"

Looking forward to a great week at camp starting Sunday. The frenzy over the flu has thankfully calmed down. Thank you to the staff that endured countless criticisms and undue blame from uninformed folks. Let's all remember there is and will always be a risk of "catching something" anytime groups of people gather. It is too bad that the virus of the moment appeared at CDB. The truth about H1N1 is that it is much less virolent than anticipated. Had it been any other virus that infected 3 of 700 people. Would we have cared to know? Good ole strep and entero virus are still out there. Whether it be a day camp, overnight camp, swimming pool or movie theater, risk of illness is always around. Individual precautions and responsibility will be our best weapons to remain well. That means only well kids should be sent to camp. Thanks for all of the screening and extra time and expense that the camp is going to.

My hat is off to the staff of CDB. I had the honor of visiting last night, and was thrilled to see how much fun all of our sons are having. I watched as the boys were tested for temps before there meal. It was impressive to me to see how the staff were able to test that many scouts without things getting out of hand. It was very obvious that they were well-trained, and that the response to the unfortunate sickness was the best it could have been. The information updates that Connie and Dan have been providing have been very accurate. For anyone not in the local area, the local ABC affiliate sent a crew there to film, and the pictures of the boys having fun and just being boys were wonderful. THANK YOU to the CDB STAFF, and COUNCIL STAFF for making CDB the best camp it can be.

Each year we have our Annual Planning Conference to plan the campouts for the coming year. All campouts for the year are decided by vote of the boys in the Patrol Leaders Council. The first decision is where to attend summer camp. Unanimous for Camp Daniel Boone for the past 22 straight years! Now you know why!
