July 1 Update
By Sheltowee @ 6:16 PM :: 357 Views :: 5 Comments ::

A light rain fell last night and the scouts rolled in their sleeping bags listening to the distant rumble of thunder. A cool damp morning ensued with a few low hanging clouds dancing with the mountain tops. After a french toast breakfast the scouts again worked towards their merit badges. In the Ecology area some walked through the stream with nets identifying salamanders and other stream life, others admiring the rare Luna Moth that graced the wall of Ledbetter Lodge all morning. I saw model rockets being built, preparing for Fridays big launch as part of Space Exploration merit badge. The first year campers continued to learn first aid and basic knots and at Boonesboro Village they continued work on the log cabin they are building, as well as the making of spoons, beadworking, blacksmithing and knifemaking. Lunch brought the leaders together for another fresh baked trout meal while the scouts enjoyed pizza.

The afternoon was filled with anticipation by many young scouts as parents night would soon be here. Around 4 PM parents began to arrive and spend time visiting their scouts and touring the camp. Flag lowering was special with a patriotic salute to our active duty military and our veterans. With the flag honorably taken down, folded and secured for the night the bluegrass band took over and the hamburger cookout dinner commenced.

After the vespers service the OA Ceremony team slowly paddled across the lake to commence the call out ceremony. The night ended with the troops performing their skits in the CDB Wednesday night Gong Show. Close to 10 the visitors filed out in their cars as the campers went back to their campsites for another night of sleep in the cool mounatin air. The staff assembled at the dining hall for a meeting to discuss the program for the rest of the week.

Thank you for the updates on our troop 14. I would agree with one of the comments above, this gives us first-time parents a great sense of relief knowing our sons are safe, having fun and giving them new opportunites to learn and grow as young men. God bless you.
