A light rain fell last night and the scouts rolled in their sleeping bags listening to the distant rumble of thunder. A cool damp morning ensued with a few low hanging clouds dancing with the mountain tops. After a french toast breakfast the scouts again worked towards their merit badges. In the Ecology area some walked through the stream with nets identifying salamanders and other stream life, others admiring the rare Luna Moth that graced the wall of Ledbetter Lodge all morning. I saw model rockets being built, preparing for Fridays big launch as part of Space Exploration merit badge. The first year campers continued to learn first aid and basic knots and at Boonesboro Village they continued work on the log .....

The scouts woke this morning to a chilly 54 degree day, the sun peeping over the mountains and bringing the first light of the day to Lake Allen. Fish jumping and coffee brewing, what a way to start the day. The scouts enjoyed a fabulous Tuesday working on their merit badges. I spoke with some of the crew on the whitewater trek and they are having a great experience. Leaders enjoyed the Scoutmaster Shoot-off and many have begun making their handmade golf clubs for Thursday’s Scoutmasters Golf Tournament.
Chili dogs for lunch and more blue skies and swimming in the swimming hole in the stream for the afternoon. Scouts hiked, climbed, shot, practiced raising and lowering the flag, learned about conservation, ecology, and how to work a forge and wood fired pottery kiln.
Another exciting, healthy day at Camp Daniel Boone.

A beautiful Sunday afternoon awaited Scouts from as far away as Texas and Virginia yesterday. All scouts went through their temperature checks and then completed the camp tour and swim check. The evening meal of Lasagna was well received and the opening campfire was possibly the best one of the season. The scouts enjoyed a cool evening amidst a sky full of stars to open their week.

Week Three ended with a great closing campfire under a beautiful starlit sky. Scoutmasters enjoyed a great round of Scoutmaster Golf on Thursday and the dutch oven cook-off Friday afternoon. Scouts worked hard to finish their merit badges and cast one last into the lake looking for that big catch.
We also received word on Friday afternoon that one of the scouts that went home with fever on Wednesday has been confirmed with H1N1 Flu. This is the only case in the past two weeks. We feel very confident that our daily temperature checks have been successful in keeping camp healthy and safe. We look forward to another great week.

Wednesday, the day of live music and cooking out on the lawn. Early this afternoon we had one scout from a troop come into the health lodge with a fever, later in the afternoon a second appeared from the same troop. Those two scouts were isolated at the time the fever appeaered and were taken home by one of the unit leaders last night. Working with unit leaders and the health department, we isolated the rest of the troop into their campsite last night, delivering dinner to them. We checked every scouts temperature and had two scouts that were slightly above normal, so we took them to the health lodge for the evening. An hour after their temperature's were taken they were taken again at the health lodge, both back to normal. They spent the night in the lodge and this morning one scouts temp was still normal temp, one was just over 100. The rest of the troop, back in the campsite passed the pre-breakfast temp check and the pre-lunch check and. They were permitted to return to the program late this morning with the blessing of the health department, except the one scout with the slight fever.
The scouts missed this mornings sessions and my staff will work with them to get them caught up.
Last night the band played again and the weather was fabulous for the hoe-down on the lawn. The troops attended vespers services prior to enjoying a great campfire where they performed their skits. Another good day at CDB.
Thursday has been another day of abundant sunshine. We have seen a lot of scouts swimming in the river and lake and alot of scouts carrying a stringer of trout from their fishing excursions. Boonesboro Village has finished building their wood fired kiln so that they can cure the pottery projects. I will try to update again tonight.

Hard to believe it is wednesday already. A quiet day in camp yesterday with bright sunshine and a great tug of war competition in the afternoon. Today brings the last performance of the summer by Juniper and the Hoe-Down cook-out on the lawn, followed by tonigth's Gong Show campfire program. The camp remaines healthy and the staff continues to deliver the Scouting program at a very high level.

Another beautiful day at camp with temperatures staying in the upper 70's. The lake is warmer than 2 weeks ago and the fish seem more active. I got to spend time visiting with several Scoutmasters and visit program areas. Good to see the program in action.
Monday is the starting day at camp, everyone getting to their merit badge sessions, getting organized and doing some of the preliminary parts of the badges. Temperatures at breakfast and dinner were taken and all is well.

685 Scouts from 16 councils and 7 states arrived at camp this afternoon. Check-in went smoothly with one scout arriving with an elevated temperature. He was taken to the health lodge for further evaluation. It was decided to send this young scout home and his parents were contacted. We regret this scout will miss this week at camp.
The troops got their pictures taken, toured camp and took their swim tests in the legendary cold water of Lake Allen. The evening opening campfire was another solid performance by the staff and scout spirit is flowing here in the hills of NC.

Week Two has come and gone. Camp had the normal bee stings and scraped knees, but otherwise remained healthy. Troops participated in the Gong Show campfire last night and received their camp awards such as the Long Rifle, Scoutmaster Dutch Oven Cook-Off award etc..
This morning was another clear cool morning with a bustle of activity, troops packed and moving and staff cleaning everything that didn't move. Adjusting tents and platforms to make sure we have enough in each site for the coming week, power washing the dining hall porch, trash pick-up, cleaning showers and restrooms etc... By noon we will have finished and by 2 this afternoon the first troops of week three will arrive. All in all 120 campers will arrive today and another 650 tomorrow from 16 different councils.

The following policies were voted on and approved by the Daniel Boone Council Executive Committee.
Tuesday, June 16, 2009
Policy # 1
The motion was made and seconded that any camper diagnosed with H1N1 while at Camp Daniel Boone who is isolated or misses program time as a result of leaving Camp Daniel Boone shall be reimbursed based on the formula calculated as total camp fee minus $50.00 processing fee prorated by the number of nights missed upon application by his troop through an authorized troop representative.
Motion was passed as presented – all in favor, none opposed
Policy # 2
The current Camp Daniel Boone refund policy was reviewed and discussed. The current policy reads:
All refunds are refundable until May 15, 2009, less the $200.00 deposit fee. We recognize that unforeseen things happen. Troops that arrive at camp with fewer scouts than are registered will be permitted a refund of one fee, less a $50 service change. Only one fee can be refunded upon arrival at camp. All refunds will be handled during your week at camp.
The motion was made to keep the current policy as written with no changes.
Motion was passed as presented – all in favor, none opposed
Policy # 3
The motion was made and seconded that we require a Scoutmaster who has a scout with influenza like illness (ili) symptoms to not bring that scout to camp; upon request in writing from the Scout leader we will give a refund minus the $50.00 processing fee.
The motion was passed as presented – all in favor, none opposed
End of Executive Committee Notes.
Please note: Policy #1 will cover scouts who are unable to attend because they have or are still contagious with an influenza like illness. All requests for reimbursements must be handled through the Scoutmaster, Committee Chairman or Camp Organizer. All checks will be made payable to the troop registered with individual payments to parents being the responsibility of the unit.

A beautiful morning here at camp, Scoutmasters still chatting about the fun game of Scoutmaster Golf that took place yesterday. All Scouts are healthy. We are working hard to help the scouts c omplete their merit badges and prepare for tonights campfire program. A Scoutmaster in camp told me last night, "Other then working through where to take everyone's temeprature upon arrival we have not noticed a single glitch this week. It is the best run camp I have seen," I want to publicly thank my staff for another outstanding week of delivering program at a very high level and delivering the level of customer service that has helped CDB sell out the last three years in a row. Also thank you to all the troops who will camp this summer, we remain yours in service.

Another fine day at camp with still no Scouts reporting any flu like symptoms. Scouts worked hard toward their merit badges today, some caught their first fish, some finally reached the top of the rock wall and all got to witness Mother Nature unleash her might in a magnificant thunderstorm late in the afternoon. Things dried out in time for the troops to cook jambalaya back in their campsites and have troop campfires, relaxing in the cool night air with fellowship among themselves. Hard to believe week two is nearly over.

Wednesday was another fine day with no scouts reporting to the health lodge with a fever. All scouts were again checked with the thermal scan thermometers. The leaders enjoyed fresh baked trout for lunch and later in the day the bluegrass band arrived and delivered a rousing performance for the hoedown on the lawn crowd.

June 16 Camp Update

The day started with a slight chill in the air, as many CDB morns do. Campers were greeted with a beautiful blue sky and biscuits and gravy for breakfast. After reciting the pledge during the daily flag raising ceremony the near 700 scouts and scouters made their way to merit badge sessions to sharpen their skills and learn more about what it means to be a scout. Trustworty, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. Not just words to recite, but to live by. I was able to witness each of these characteristics in action today as the Scouting program was in full action again at Camp Daniel Boone.
The temperature checks for all scouts were in the normal range and the scouts and scouters enjoyed the day hiking, fishing, pioneering, rock climbing and just relaxing in the many rocking chairs on the CDB porch. The staff worked hard to make sure each scout made progress towards their many merit badges, or a personal goal of learning to swim or canoe or climb to the top of the rock wall. The ranges were popular places as scouts honed their shooting skills and learned the lessons of gun and range safety.
The afternoon brought passing thunderstorms and a crisp clean scent to the mountain air, the 6,000 foot peak of Cold Mountain engulfed with the passing clouds. Evening came and another perfect day for scouting had passed into the history books. A great day in the annuals of Camp Daniel Boone.

6-15-09 Camp Update

Camp reports that it has been a calm and good day for scouting, with no new health incidents to report. Staff and Campers have enjoyed the day after a great campfire last night. Our notification to incoming leaders asking them to screen all incoming campers resulted in all scouts reporting with no apparent illnesses. We will continue this procedure throughout the season.
Camp officials met with the Haywood County Health department officials today to review last week's camp procedures and procedures moving forward. We are operating on a two prong approach of active surveillance of staff and campers and getting anyone reporting an illness out of the general population when identified.
We are concerned about new reports of new cases from scouts who have returned home and wish for them to have a speedy recovery. It is important to note that while we knew there were children in camp who were ill, the H1N1 confimations were not reported to us until late Thursday evening. At that time we began notifying leaders and following health department procedures. All leaders in camp should have received letters to give to their scouts and parents. It is possible that with some leaders departing early the letters might not have been received.
We are happy to hear that other state health departments have been in contact with leaders since we provided contact information through our health department to other states.
We appreciate all posts to this website but especially those that offer constructive advice. We will do our best to keep everyone posted through this website.

Daniel Boone Council

Camp Daniel Boone Update

Fellow Scouters,
This note is to update you on the status of Camp Daniel Boone and clarify some of the decisions made during week one. We had several campers come into the health lodge from one troop on Monday with a fever. They were checked with our standard thermometer using a protective cover. At this time we called the Haywood County Health Department to begin working with them. They visited our facility on Tuesday and took samples to be tested. All scouts with the fever were isolated from the time the fever was detected. Most of these scouts voluntarily went home the next day, those who chose to stay remained in isolation. Thursday evening we received the results with two confirmed cases of H1N1 Flu. We were asked to check every camper that night to limit the possible spread.
We visited the local stores purchasing every thermometer and cover available, then used alcohol wipes as a last resort to sterilize all thermometers. Each unit was issued a thermometer and alcohol or covers. We have since acquired 3 digital infrared thermometers that read temperatures from the forehead. We have not received word from any health department of additional confirmed cases at this time. We are scheduled to update the situation on Monday with the Haywood County Health Department officials who were present in camp during check-in today. We are happy to report that all campers arriving today were screened for fever and all campers appear to be healthy and looking forward to a great week at camp. The campsite that had the prominent number of cases last week has been closed for this week. We expect to reopen it next week.
We will continue to monitor all campers and staff throughout the week. We have taken steps to treat all staff to ensure their health and the health of our campers for future weeks. We anticipate a full season of service to our scouts and scouters this summer as we have for 70 years.
Please continue to post questions and we will do our best to respond as quickly as possible.
Yours in Scouting,
Dan Rogers
Camp Director

June 12, 2009
This Letter is to inform you that there have been two (2) confirmed cases of NovelH1N1 Influenza/Swine Flu diagnosed in campers at Camp Daniel Boone this week with several others suspected ill individuals. Because Novel H1N1 is now global, we must assume that all persons presenting with influenza like illnesses are infected with Novel H1N1 Influenza.
Because it may take between 1 to 10 days to develop symptoms, please monitor your child for any signs of influenza (fever greater than 100 F and either sore throat, nasal congestion, cough, body aches, runny or stuffy noses, chills fatigue, diarrhea, or vomiting). Persons exhibiting any of these symptoms should be seperated from well family members, kept at home and medical advice sought from your health care provider or your local health department.
If you have any questions, please call Camp Daniel Boone at 828-648-0435 or the Haywood County Health Department at 828-452-6675.
Thank You, Camp Daniel Boone and Haywood County Health Department.

April 14, 2009
Fellow Scouters,
Our March workday was a tremendous success! There were 88 participants in all. A special mention goes out to the members of the Executive Scouting Committee who installed a new shingle roof on an Adirondack. Troop 316, under the guidance of Richard Hodge, cut trees and chipped brush in the Cherokee campsite. Members of Troop 3 installed 70 feet of steps and leveled tent platforms in the Arrowhead campsite. True Morse and Troop 53 limbed and chipped white pines in the long-term parking lot. Pack 316 and Kenny Mills picked up trash on the Little Eastfork Road. The amount of work achieved was AMAZING and greatly appreciated!! The Camping Committee would like to thank each and every one of the participants for their hard work.
As you all know, there is always work to be done at camp. We can use all the help we can get so check your calendars for the monthly workdays and spread the word. Bring your Scouts out for some hard work as well as lots of fun and fellowship. Together we can make Camp Daniel Boone the greatest camp of all!!
Thanks again,
