Events

  1. Tomahawk Throwing Skills – The word “tomahawk” was derived from the Algonquian word otomahuk, meaning “to knock down.” Throwing the hawk is a unique sport that requires discipline, control, and accuracy and can be one of the most memorable activities for leaders and scouts.
  2. Fire Building Skills – The objective of the fire building event is to see which patrol can boil a #10 can full of water the faster. Each patrol will need to supply all their own wood, supplies, and equipment for this event. The #10 can must e full of water, suspended over the fire, and come to a rolling boil. No liquid propellent or liquid fire starter is allowed in this event. Safe handling of fire and appropriate methods will also be observed and judged. Bonus points will be given for patrols that are able to start their fire without using matches.
  3. Lumberjack Skills -  The objective of this event is for scouts to become familiar with and safely use knives, axes, hatchets, wedges, and saws in the outdoor setting. The competition will involve the patrol using provided bow saws to cut wooden disks from a log in the least amount of time. All materials for this event will be provided.
  4. Communication Skills – Being prepared for the challenges that are found in life is very important. Good communication is vital for individual or group success. Each patrol will be faced with multiple challenges and tests that require communication, leadership, and listening in order to complete the assignment and solve the problem they are given. Your scouts will need to focus their attention and work together creatively to complete each assignment. All scouts must participate in each event in this area for the patrol to receive the points for completing and participating in the event.
  5. Obstacle Course Skills – Each patrol will be asked to complete the “Tough Scout Obstacle Course.” This course will require agility, speed, strength and concentration from each scout and patrol. All members of the patrol will be required to participate in the entire course in order to receive points for completing the event. If a scout encounters difficulty in completing a certain obstacle or obstacles, patrol members will be allowed to assist the scout. Once it is determined by the course officials that appropriate assistance is needed for the scout to successfully complete the course, assistance may be given to the individual scout to ensure that everyone completes the obstacle course.
  6. Patrol Cooking Skills – From 3-6pm on Saturday afternoon each patrol will be cooking a main dish and a side item (side item can be a dessert) to go with the main dish. The amount of food in the main dish and side item should be enough to feed the patrol that prepares it, plus 2 additional people. At 6pm every patrol will bring their dishes to the scoutcraft building to be judged. Food will be judged according to taste, appearance, presentation, and difficulty of preparation. Once all judging is complete, the entire camp will feast on all the food that has been prepared.
  7. Tug-of-War Event - This will be a head-to-head event. The origins of Tug-of-War date back to ancient Greece, Egypt, India, China, and Cambodia. It was used by military commanders in the 8th-5th centuries BC to train warriors for battle. This event will take place at the end of the day and mostly play heavily in determining the overall winner of the Cold Spot event. It will be judged under the same ten-point scoring system as all the prior events.

*NOTE: Each patrol is to provide all needed equipment and gear to complete every event except for the Lumberjack skills event. All equipment will be provided to each patrol for the Lumberjack skills event. If a patrol does not have the necessary equipment to complete a specific event, they will forfeit their score for that particular event.

 

Scoutmaster Competition

This year’s Scoutmaster competition will be making a walking stick. The scoutmasters will have from 8:30am until 2:30pm on Saturday to fashion the best functioning and creatively designed walking stick possible. All material used for this competition must be obtained from the grounds of Camp Daniel Boone. No pre-made sticks will be allowed to be used in the competition. Scoring will be based on unique design features, quality of finish, intricacy of carving, and overall adequacy of function. You are allowed to use leather, rope, or other materials as part of the design and function of the stick. A handsome prize will be awarded the winner of this event.

 

Camping

Each troop will be assigned a particular campsite prior to arrival. We will be making these assignments based on the total number of participants that each troop registers. We will do our best to use the campsites with Adirondacks and cabins so you will not be using tents. However, you may want to bring tents and be prepared to use them if our numbers exceed the available Adirondacks and cabins. You will certainly need to bring tarps because some Adirondacks do not have doors.
